Facing the Rising Tide, Born Just in Time

Successful 9th WBC Ushered the Founding of CSBM

With the endeavor and support of Shi Chuangxu and other senior scientists, the Ministry of Civil Affairs officially approved the founding of Chinese Society for Biomaterials on July 13, 2011 after the review and approval by the State Council in order to welcome the successful holding of the 9th World Biomaterials Congress, to promote the development of biomaterials science and engineering in China, and to improve people's the health and life quality.

The CSBM founding conference was held at the new meeting center in Beihang University on April 6, 2012. More than 100 delegates attended the conference, including Shen Aimin, Zhu Xuefen, and Liang Yingnan from China Association of Science and Technology; Wei Yuquan, Vice President of Sichuan University; Zhang Xingdong, Zhou Lian and Lu Shibi, Academicians of Chinese Society of Engineering; Zhu Hesun, Vice President of the former Chinese Committee of Biomaterials. At the conference, Zhang Xingdong was recommended to be the first President and Shi Changxu the Honorary President. Biomaterials experts around the country discussed and voted the first members of the Council.

Biomaterials serve as the necessities to safeguard people’s health and are fundamental to biomedical engineering and bio-tech, the two pillars to modern medicine. The biomaterial industry is a typically high-tech new industry characterized by creating high values at a low cost of raw materials, energy and environmental pollution, which is gradually growing into a mainstay industry to the world economy. The development of biomaterials is of significant social, economic, and scientific meaning, which is an urgent need for the social and economic development in China. Since the 11th Five-Year Plan, it has been listed as the important high-tech new materials which need to be developed with focus. In the 12th Five-Year Plan, in particular, more supports are given to biomaterials development. It can be concluded that the founding of CSBM catches the good opportunity of time when China’s biomaterials and its industry are rising, which will inevitably boost the upgrading of modern medicine in China.
