The 9th World Biomaterials Congress Proved a Great Success

The 9th World Biomaterials Congress, held at Chengdu Century International Convention Center during June 1 to 5, has achieved a great success. It was endorsed by Chinese Society for Biomaterials (CSBM) and International Union of Societies of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUSBSE), and hosted by Chengdu Municipal People’s Government and Sichuan University. The 9th WBC was held in a developing country for the first time in its 32 years’ history, which has demonstrated that Chinese biomaterials science and engineering has reached the internationally advanced level.

The 9th WBC has drawn attention from Chinese national leaders, relevant Ministries and Departments as well as Sichuan Provincial People’s Government and Chengdu Municipal People’s Government. Liu Yandong, State Councilor of the State Council of P.R.C, and Chen Changzhi, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress sent letters of congratulations to the 9th WBC. Yang Rudai, the former Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, attended the 9th WBC. Leaders from National Development and Reform Commission of China, Ministry of Education of China, Ministry of Science and Technology of China, Ministry of Health of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering, National Natural Science Foundation of China, State Food and Drug Administration of China, and China Association for Science and Technology, as well as Sichuan Provincial People’s Government and Chengdu Municipal People’s Government either attended the Congress and delivered the address, or sent their letter of congratulations to the Congress.

World Biomaterials Congress is the most influential international event in the global biomaterials community. The Congress had the theme of "Innovative biomaterials and crossing frontiers in biomaterials and regenerative medicine”. Over 3600 delegates, including more than 1900 overseas delegates, attended the Congress. The Congress had 8 plenary lectures, 1 special public lecture, 167 oral presentations, and 1686 posters. During the Congress, there were a series of activities, including International Top-Level Forum on Engineering Science and Technology Development Strategy, Industrial Forum, Young Scientist Forum, Communication with Overseas Chinese Biomaterials Scholars, and Career Fair etc.

The 9th WBC was such a great success that many domestic and international delegates spoke highly of it. “… this has been a most successful World Congress…And the scientific and technical level of the meeting has been of the highest quality…” (Nicholas A. Peppas, President of IUSBSE) “I wish to put it on record that it was the best organized congress I have ever seen. All Asians are proud and I felt overwhelmed… It was certainly a reminder of Olympics. It was obvious that when Chinese People commit something they really complete it in great style.” (Chandra Sharma, Founder of Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs-India)

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to State Councilor Liu Yandong, Vice-Chairman Chen Changzhi, and relevant Ministries and Departments, Sichuan Provincial People’s Government and Chengdu Municipal People’s Government for your strong support. Thank you, all the international and domestic friends and colleagues, for your contributions to the success of the 9th WBC.
